Highway between North Tahoe, Spooner to close for three nights

A well-traveled section of Highway 28 between North Lake Tahoe and Spooner Summit will be closed Tuesday through Thursday.

Nevada Department of Transportation crews will upgrade the surface on the highway between the U.S. Highway 50 intersection and Ponderosa Ranch Road, on the west side of Incline Village, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.

People who live along the highway will be able to access their homes.

“NDOT feels that closing 28 is much more practical than doing traffic control during the day, which would back up traffic for miles,” NDOT spokesman Scott Magruder said.

In summer 2009, NDOT completed a $5 million project to resurface Highway 28 from Incline Village to U.S. 50, shutting it down for 12 days.

This week’s work is part of the project’s planned maintenance, Magruder said.

According to a 2007 NDOT traffic study, about 7,700 vehicles travel daily from the U.S. 50 junction through Incline Village.

Drivers heading to and from Carson City during the closures can take Highway 431 to Galena, then head south on Interstate 580. Those seeking to get to South Lake Tahoe can circle Lake Tahoe along the west shore.

Each route adds 30 to 45 minutes of driving time.
