Business-help Web site gets tryout

The City of Reno will soon decide if a sponsored Web site to help local entrepreneurs is doing the job.

MyQuickCoachReno.com features three-minute videos addressing a variety of business issues such as how to look for financing or conduct employee reviews or write a business plan. The site is free to use as long as it’s accessed from a computer with a Reno IP address.

The site is an experiment for Reno, which is testing it free of charge through August, when the city decides whether the site garnered enough traffic to pay for the service.

The Web site is hosted by AthenaOnline, the videos’ maker, and is an experiment for the company, too. The Emeryville, Calif., company is trying to see if municipalities rather than businesses might be the best market for its library of 1,800 problem-oriented business videos.

The company chose Reno to start because of AthenaOnline’s close ties to the Institute for Management Studies, a 39-year-old producer of business seminars based in Reno.

“We are linked at the hip,” says Gordon Peters, IMS chief executive officer, who says the companies share the same founders.

IMS conducts monthly business seminars for its more than 400 worldwide members, who are large corporations aligned in 26 major regions such as Dallas, Toronto and London. Representatives from the regions meet annually to vote on the seminar subjects and the faculty to teach them. About 75 faculty members, most from academia, teach about 90 different seminars every year, says Peters.
