C. H. Startweather of Carson is named by the Pioche Record as a person who “hopes to have the pleasure of establishing a Lodge of the Knights (of Pythias) at Pioche. It is hoped to start one in Carson next month.

130 years ago

On Sunday last the Pioneer Society held a picnic at Treadway’s Ranch, which was but slimly attended. It is only in late years the picnics of various societies of the Comstock have been held on Sunday.

100 years ago

Word came from Glenbrook this evening of the death of Calvin H. Maish, one of the pioneer residents of this city. Mr. Maish had suffered a paralytic stroke some time ago. Cal Maish was one of the early settlers of Carson. He was a native of Kentucky and joined the Federal Army at the outbreak of the war and had a keen interest in the old guard and shooting records.

The up-and-coming Rotary Club team tied up the softball team standings with an outstanding upset last night over the leading team, Ship Bar, 7 to 1.

Queen Mary Jane Hunting will relinquish her crown Saturday night to either Linda Faville, Vickie Landeck or Lyn Pochop as winner of the 1963 Babe Ruth Baseball Queen Contest.

Carson hosts the ninth annual “Run What You Brung” Karson Kruisers car show at Fuji Park.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
