Students awarded scholarships from GNCU

Ila Bottoms, Arnold Flores, Leana Garcia, Allison Blair and Janae Johnston-Bucker of Carson City are five of 14 students recently awarded $1,000 scholarship certificates from Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Bottoms and Flores attend Western Nevada College; Garcia attends Great Basin College in Elko; and Blair and Johnston-Bucker will attend the University of Nevada, Reno.

The scholarships were awarded on a competitive basis, and winners were selected based on their financial need, academic performance, personal statement, recommendations from school and community leaders and community involvement.

Cariaga graduates from George Fox University

Chae Cariaga of Minden graduated from George Fox University in Newberg, Ore., May 4 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.

Walking tour of trees is July 18

Tom Henderson, owner and president of Healthy Trees, will lead a walking tour to explain the history of trees in Carson City at 6 p.m. July 18 at the Capitol Grounds. `

The lecture will offer insights on fossil records to show some of the earliest tree species in the area.
