Library News and Notes Presentation to help young adults find jobs

One of life’s more difficult challenges for young adults (and adults too) is finding employment. The economy is uncertain and the playing field is not level. Unsure about what action to take, many take no action at all. Counseling therapists Kristopher Komarek, MSW, CSW-Intern and Jeffrey Davis, MSW, LCSW, will host a discussion entitled “From Sofa to Salary: Launching Your Young Adult” at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8, in the library auditorium. Library patrons could consider attending the presentation and then registering for some of the free classes at the digital media center, @Two.

BookMasters Book Club

After comedienne Paula Poundstone’s well-received appearance in Carson City on behalf of the Friends of the Library, it seems appropriate that the BookMasters would select her book, “There’s Nothing in this Book That I Meant to Say” for its April reading selection. Entertaining, hilarious, and sometimes deadly serious, Poundstone discusses seven historical figures, from Joan of Arc to the Wright brothers, and relates to them with comical results. She also deals frankly with the nightmarish consequences of her alcoholism and the temporary loss of custody of her children. The book club meets at 6 p.m. April 9 and 23 in the library auditorium.

Book Review: Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead

Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and author of ”Lean In,” seems to be everywhere. Her just-released book, which examines the continuing shortage of leadership roles for women and offers experienced-based advice — telling women to “sit at the table,” take risks, seek challenges and pursue goals with determination and enthusiasm is sure to spark many a conversation. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, opines, “The book is smart, honest and funny. Her words will help all readers — especially men — become better and more effective leaders.” The book is available on the library’s eBook site, Overdrive.

Photoshop Classes

These classes are some of the most popular, well-attended workshops the digital media center @Two offers. Because they use the high-tech computers and space is limited, signing up early is a good idea. Photoshop Elements 11 meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the media center, and Beginning Photoshop CS6 meets at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8 in the media center. Register for this and other free classes at www.bookeo.com/carsoncitylibrary. Assistance with registration is available at the @Two Digital Learning Center Help Desk.
