Domestic violence bill clears Legislature

Domestic violence victims in Nevada will have a new tool to help them escape abusive relationships.

The Nevada Senate unanimously approved Assembly Bill 284, sponsored by Democratic Assemblywoman Lucy Flores of Las Vegas. It now goes to the governor.

It establishes notice requirements and steps victims must take to terminate housing leases. Among them are presenting the landlord with a police report, restraining order or affidavit from a third party affirming the tenant’s account.

Affidavits must identify the alleged abuser. The bill also authorizes landlords to go after abusers for lost rent or damage to the dwelling.
