Leadership adviser named at Carson High

As a high school teacher, wife and mother of two, Ann Britt knows that taking over as the leadership adviser at Carson High School is going to make her schedule even more hectic. But, she said, she’s up to the challenge.

“I think I can handle what’s coming,” she said. “It’s going to be a really hard year in terms of the amount of work, but in the long run, I think it will be really rewarding.”

Britt, who has taught physical education and health at Carson High School for five years, will serve the remainder of the year as the leadership adviser, taking over for health teacher Misty Harris, who recently resigned.

“The past few years have been an amazing experience for me and I leave this position with a great amount of sadness as well as gratitude,” Harris said in an email. “Because of the increased demands of my teaching assignment I have found that I am unable to complete all of the responsibilities associated with my extracurricular duties. I do look forward to being able to put my undivided attention into teaching and still being a part of the Carson High community.”

Britt graduated from Douglas High School in 1995. After college, she and her husband, a 1988 Carson High School graduate, moved to Carson City, where she began her career at Eagle Valley Middle School. She taught there for six years, including serving as the leadership teacher.

“I loved working with the kids who were excited to be at school, who were excited to participate and who were working to step out of their comfort zones to make school fun,” she said. “I had a really good time.”

Britt expects a similar experience at the high school level.

“I’m really excited to work with these kids,” she said. “I’m super-confident in them and their work ethic. I’m confident this year will be successful.”

Britt, who also has served as the adviser for the freshman tutoring club MASH, regularly participates in school activities.

“I think it’s super-important for the kids to see the staff in a different light,” she said. “It’s important for them to see us laugh, have a good time, socialize. It’s important they can connect with us other than that relationship inside the classroom.”

As the leadership adviser, she will help students plan and carry out those activities, including prom and Winterfest. They also have upcoming leadership conferences in Reno and Spring Creek.

“The kids are fantastic,” Britt said. “They are on top of it. It’s just a matter of getting me caught up. We’re not going to miss a beat.”
