Unwired Planet Inc. of Reno said last week it struck a fixed-fee agreement with the law firm of McKool Smith to handle litigation on Unwired Planet’s portfolio of patents.
The deal is expected to reduce litigation expenses for Unwired Planet by about 50 percent, said Eric Vetter, president of the publicly held company.
McKool Smith, which is headquartered in Dallas, agreed with Unwired Planet to fix its legal fees at $500,000 a month for 24 months.
If the litigation with Google, Apple and Blackberry continues beyond 24 months, McKool Smith will receive a contingency fee based on licensing revenues that Unwired Planet might receive.
Unwired Planet remains responsible for expenses such as travel and expert-witness fees.
