Government students serve on a mock jury

MOCK JURY

Twelve CHS honors and advanced-placement government students recently served as the mock jury for the Nevada Department of Public Safety. Each year the department provides a two week Basic Narcotic Investigation course for law enforcement officers, National Guard and Naval officers.

The course is called the Nevada Drug Investigation School. The course was a mock drug investigation from start to finish. The mock scenario began with a tip about a drug dealer and ended with a courtroom trial.

CHS students acted as jurors for the courtroom scenario. The mock jury took place in Judge John Tatro’s courtroom. This was a hands-on learning experience for CHS government students who had the opportunity to see the courtroom trial from the eyes of a jury. The 12 students who participated were: Josh Breen, Delaney Cobb, Elizabeth Hansen, Elizabeth Flansberg, Taylor Vizzusi, Zoey Gray, Porfirio Jauregui, Adam Peterson, Victor Quispe, Greta Sturm, Rebecca Matley and Haley Ridgely.

CHS STUDENT CELEBRATIONS

Samantha Schultz, a Carson High School senior, participated in this year’s HobbyStock Division at Diamond Mountain Speeday in Susanville, Calif., driving a 1977 Firebird Stock Car. At 17 years old, she was the youngest to participate and she was also the only female in this division.

Not only did she participate, but she won the season championship.

Samantha has been racing since she was 9 years old as a go-kart racer at the old Carson race track, as well as in Red Bluff, Calif. We congratulate Samantha on this awesome achievement!

NJROTC Cadet Christopher Soderstrom, a senior, has been awarded the Cadet Meritorious Achievement Ribbon from the Area THIRTEEN Manager Captain Dan Wenceslao. Cadet Chief Petty Officer Soderstrom received the award for performing an outstanding act. On June 12, Soderstrom saved the life of his father, Clay Soderstrom, by expertly performing the Heimlich maneuver to clear and open his occluded airway.

Capt. Wenceslao said that, “Cadet Soderstrom’s extraordinary execution, prompt action and great ability to perform calmly under pressure reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, his school, and the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.”

Carson High School is very proud of the life-saving efforts of Cadet Soderstrom and for receiving this esteemed award.

Skills USA

Attention SkillsUSA members: The monthly meeting is Wednesday at lunch in the culinary restaurant upstairs.

Wear your red SkillsUSA T-shirt, we will be taking our yearbook photo and planning community service projects.

UNR VISIT

The admissions recruiter from UNR will be at CHS at 1 p.m. Monday in the Tech Center Conference Room. Seniors who are considering attending UNR and have any questions should attend.

The UNR recruiter will be coming monthly to meet with prospective students, but this is the only time she will be here before the Nov. 15 early-admit deadline.

If you are trying to decide if you should apply early or wait until the Feb. 1 deadline for scholarship purposes, this would be the time to ask questions.

Remember, Monday is an early release day, so you will need to stay after school is out to meet with the representative.

SENIOR PHOTOS

Seniors: If you did not have your senior pictures taken during the summer, you will have a chance to have them taken during Senior Makeups.

The photos will be taken Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 29 and 30, at the Marriott Hotel on South Carson Street.
