“You have no idea what you’re in for, Brian.”
That’s what co-workers and readers tell me when I ask what I should expect on my first Nevada Day, a scant six days from today. I’ve looked at pictures and read all about the spectacle, but I’ve been assured that nothing compares with the in-person experience.
We’ll have an all-hands-on-deck approach at the Appeal when it comes to coverage. My own assignment is covering the beard contest and might skip shaving for a few days beforehand so I’ll better fit in. Our photographers, Shannon Litz and Jim Grant, will further document the event that kicks off our state’s yearlong sesquicentennial celebration.
As I’ve written before in this space, this state has been a fantastic home. Once I’ve attended Saturday’s festivities, I’ll feel comfortable calling myself a true Nevadan. I’m looking forward to it.

According to a poll posted Wednesday at nevadaappeal.com, 39 percent of readers blame President Obama for the recent government shutdown, 33 percent blame Republicans in Congress and 28 percent blame Democrats. That’s a small sample size of our readers — 364 had taken the poll as of Friday morning — but it’s interesting nonetheless.
We aim to interact with readers across numerous platforms, and polls are one of those platforms. Past polls have focused on a possible strike in Syria, a possible Carson City disc golf course and the Supreme Court tossing part of a law that denied some benefits to same-sex couples. If you’re curious, 76 percent of more than 1,200 respondents opposed a U.S.-led strike in Syria, nearly 60 percent of 4,200 respondents approved of the city spending money to bring disc golf to town, and 55 percent of 3,200 readers approved of the high court’s action.
