WNC News & Notes: ‘Carson City’s Got Talent’ participants sought

Western Nevada College students invite residents to showcase their skills and artistry in “Carson City’s Got Talent” on Saturday, Nov. 16.

An evening of entertainment for the whole family, sponsored by the WNC Latino Student Club, will bring students and residents together to enjoy and raise money for WNC student scholarships. Singers, musicians, dancers, comedians and other entertainers are sought for the 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. show at the Carson Nugget.

“We would like to showcase the talent of our community,” said Jose Quiroga, adviser for the Latino Student Club. “Providing scholarships to students is a way to strengthen our community and give back. It is a privilege to be able to help students realize their dreams.”

Auditions are set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Aspen Building at WNC’s Carson City campus. Contestant fees are $5 for solo entertainers and $10 for couples. There will be prizes for first- through third-place finishers.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students with school ID, $4 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children younger than 5. Raffle tickets will be available for many prizes.

Last year, the event included 28 performers and attracted 350 people, raising more than $1,000 toward scholarships.

Campus Club HOSTS Dinner Fundraiser

The Western Nevada College Douglas Campus Diversity Club invites the community to “La Vita è Bella,” an Italian dinner fundraiser set for Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden. The all-ages event includes a dinner buffet from 6-7 p.m., followed by entertainment from Forever Dance Studio and a silent auction. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $25, with the hope that many families can attend.

The student club has focused on community-minded fundraising causes. This year, the students will assist the Suicide Prevention Network of Douglas County. Proceeds from the event will be divided between WNC student scholarships and the chosen charity.

In the past, the club has raised money for Austin’s House in Minden and the Douglas Animal Welfare Group in Gardnerville.

‘Books Are Fun’ Fair Set for Oct. 29-30

Get an early start on holiday shopping by visiting the Books Are Fun Book Fair on Oct. 29-30 at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Proceeds help fund professional development for college classified staffers.

Children’s storybooks, cookbooks, New York Times best sellers and general-interest books are among the 250 titles that will be available.

Early-learning and children’s educational products as well as stationery, scrapbooking and music collections also will be offered.
