An official lighting ceremony is planned this afternoon in front of the Carson City Community Center to kick off use of the city’s new, computerized LED events sign.
The sign, erected under a contract for more than $100,000 approved by the Board of Supervisors, replaces a sign that had to be changed manually and was branded a relic by the Chamber of Commerce.
“Staff had to use a ladder to change the message,” according to a Tuesday chamber news release from Ronni Hannaman, executive director. She said that after today’s 3 p.m. ceremony, “all it will take is a computer programmer to change the messages.”
She said the cost to replace the sign was handled from various quarters, including city government’s redevelopment funds. Among others donating were the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Western Nevada College, the Downtown Business Association, the city Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Department, with the chamber offering an in-kind workload contribution by securing the donations and shepherding the project.
Presiding at today’s ceremony will be Mayor Robert Crowell, Parks and Recreation Director Roger Moellendorf and Stan Jones, past chairman of the city’s chamber.
