Sportsman’s Warehouse official opening attracts outdoor enthusiasts in droves

Sportsman’s Warehouse opened officially at Carson Mall Saturday, attracting hundreds of shoppers along with a few dignitaries for a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Store Manager Katy Gay, a Carson High School graduate and veteran employee of the Utah-based outdoor outfitter chain, cut the green ribbon after remarks by Mayor Robert Crowell and Gil Yanuck, chairman of Carson City’s Chamber of Commerce. The mayor opened with a rhetorical question.

“This is a great day for Carson City,” said Crowell, “isn’t it?”

Soon afterward, Yanuck cut to the chase.

“I can’t wait to get inside,” he said, noting he had his shopping list and it looked like a few hundred others did as well. Shoppers galore were lined up around the south end of the mall and the parking lot was jammed with cars. Many of those on hand were bundled up for the brisk spring weather.

The crowd was told the outfitter had .22 caliber ammunition available in sufficient supply so everyone should be able to get at least a box of the bullets, which have been in short supply for some time.

The Bealls family apparel site next door to the north in the mall, located in the 1300 and 1400 blocks of South Carson Street, is still under going work but already displays the Texas-based firm’s sign. It will have a grand opening on April 24, providing the mall with two anchor tenants

Sportsman’s Warehouse has actually been open about a week, undergoing what retailers call a shakeout soft opening before Saturday’s grand opening event.
