Woodmen, Attention. On the 23rd of this blessed month, that is to say on Thursday of this week, a certain convocation of politic wood drivers will meet at the Ormsby House for the purpose of forming a corporation whose object it is to be to navigate and steer the bustling cord-wood as it progresses from its native hills and gulches toward the marts of commerce — even to our port of entry, near auto the glades and groves which make Dutch Nick’s the classic spot of Ormsby County.

The Friday evening dances. Mrs. Alt’s Friday evening dances at the Armory Hall continue to increase in popularity and are attended by the best social element of this city. The music under the leadership of Professor Zimmer is excellent. Mrs. Alt is certainly entitled to the gratitude of the dancing community.

100 years ago

Late last night Gov. Oddie received a telegram from the New Times querying as to the number of militia that Nevada could furnish in the event the draft was made on individual states. Gov. Oddie replied that Nevada is anxious to furnish regiment of calvary, battalion of engineers and hospital corps. Nevada’s militia strength currently comprises a membership of 312.

70 years ago

Pride of the old Nevada Central railroad, the “Sidney Dillon,” has been rechristened “Nevada Emma” and the 63-year-old locomotive is in operation on an authentic narrow gauge railroad in San Gabriel, Calif.

50 years ago

1964 is a presidential year and also an election year for Carson High School. Six students are seeking office as president including John Felesina, Fred Jones, Joseph Modarelli, Kenneth Reil, Joe Sheeketski and Gary Westberg.

30 years ago

The Humboldt River is lapping at the bottom of U.S. Highway 95 bridge in Winnemucca, threatening the cut off the communities’ sole link to Oregon. Winnemucca stands to be the hardest hit after last season’s record snowfall.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
