Home fires occur more in winter than in any other season; add holiday decorations and your risk for a home fire increases.

As you deck the halls this season, the Carson City Fire Department reminds residents to be fire smart.

Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns.

Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents.

Add water to the tree stand on a daily basis and properly dispose of the tree shortly after Christmas or when it’s dry. Trees should not be placed outside the home or stored in a garage.

Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and no more than 50 bulbs for screw-in light sets.

Keep doorways, hallways and exits clear when setting up your tree, whether it’s natural cut or artificial.

Keep portable heaters at least three-feet away from anything that might burn, including decorations, furniture, bedding, clothing, pets and people.

By following these simple, but often overlooked, safety tips you will be well on your way to a safe and happy holiday season.

The Carson City Fire Department wishes everyone a safe winter and holiday season.
