Western Nevada College News & Notes: Student, faculty donations to make Christmas merriee

Western Nevada College students and faculty are not just preparing for final exams this month. They also are working to put smiles on children’s faces on Christmas morning, and keep families warm during the cold winter months. Numerous charitable projects are being coordinated on WNC campuses in December.

The Associated Students of Western Nevada on the Carson City and Fallon campuses have set up Mitten Trees that are being adorned with donations of new hats, gloves and scarves. Additional donations are invited.

In addition, WNC Nursing faculty members are sponsoring an Angel Tree at the Carson City campus to collect gifts for needy families.

On the Carson City campus, Mitten Trees have been set up in the College Gallery on the main floor of the Bristlecone Building, and at the entrance of the second floor of the Cedar Building.

At the Fallon campus, Mitten Trees are located in both Pinon Hall and Virgil Getto Hall. Items gathered in Fallon are earmarked for the New Frontier Treatment Center in Fallon.

At the Carson City campus, Mitten Tree donations will go to Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

“We can all help make the holidays warmer and maybe a bit merrier for local children whose families have been traumatized by violence, addiction, and broken homes,” said Coordinator of Student Life Lilly Leon-Vicks.

All are invited to make donations on both campuses through Friday, Dec. 12. The winter apparel collected on the Carson City campus will be delivered to children housed in shelters for abused women in Carson City.

Meanwhile, the Nursing Department on the Carson City campus has continued its tradition of fulfilling the Christmas wishes of needy children in the community. Through a partnership with the Salvation Army of Carson City, faculty staff and students have set up an Angel Tree that includes tags with the Christmas wishes of local children.

“Our goal is 100 gifts for the Salvation Army in town, and so far we have distributed 80 tags,” said Nursing Professor Deborah Ingraffia-Strong, who is coordinating the effort.

To participate, donors need only to remove a tag from the tree that is located in room 231 of the Cedar Building and purchase the desired gift. The unwrapped gifts need to be delivered to the Nursing and Allied Health office by Thursday, Dec. 18.
