Make-A-Wish sending Carson girl to Hawaii

The Northeastern California and Northern Nevada Chapter of Make-A-Wish is giving a trip to Maui to Alexis “Lexi” Speer-Edwards, a 14-year-old Silver State Charter School student who was diagnosed with lymphoma more than a year ago.

Speer-Edwards was chosen as one of more than 50 Make-A-Wish ambassadors throughout the country.

Speer-Edwards, who has never been out of the continental United States, spent the first eight years of her life in Orange County, Calif. Her dream of a Hawaiian vacation will include her mom, step dad and three of her seven siblings.

Macy’s in Reno held a celebration for Speer-Edwards on Dec. 12. The event included Hawaiian music, Polynesian dancers and a shopping spree and other gifts.

Until Christmas Eve, Macy’s is donating $1 to Make-A-Wish for every letter to Santa dropped in a mailbox at each of the department stores. Last year, nearly $14,000 was raised in the greater Reno-Sparks and Carson City area, and Make-A-Wish hopes to raise even more this year.
