ELKO — More than a dozen Nevada mine workers are safe after they spent a rainy night in their trucks when a slide blocked the exit road from the bottom of an open pit gold mine.
Barrick Gold Corp. spokesman Louis Schack confirmed Monday all 14 miners were rescued and no one was hurt after a wall failed Sunday afternoon at the Bald Mountain mine about 70 miles southeast of Elko.
He told the Elko Daily Free Press the haulage road was blocked so the miners took shelter in their equipment after they communicated to managers they were safe, with food and water. Several haul trucks and other equipment was in the pit, but none was damaged.
Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Lauren North said Monday the agency had no immediate information about the incident.
