Fundraiser for melanoma patient set for Feb. 21

Sponsorships are taking off for a “friendly” dodgeball tournament Feb. 21 between firefighters and deputies to benefit the family of a Douglas County sheriff’s investigator.

Sgt. Bernadette Smith, who is helping coordinate the event with Brian Trute of the East Fork Fire District, said several businesses and organizations in the community have stepped up.

The tournament is set for 6-8:30 p.m. at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School and will feature teams of deputies, firefighters and dispatchers.

In addition to the dodgeball games, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Explorers will perform a flag ceremony, followed by the national anthem.

A dance troupe will perform between matches.

Volunteers from the sheriff’s office and fire district were providing support for the event, such as rounding up raffle prizes and sponsoring T-shirts, Smith said.

Smith invited businesses and individuals to donate items for a raffle by Feb. 19.

Proceeds from the tournament are going to Elisa Storke, who is undergoing treatment for stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Her husband, Jon, is a sheriff’s investigator and Carson Valley native.

Tickets for the tournament are $20 per family and $10 per individual.
