Tech trainer for library now Walt

Former Carson City Supervisor Molly Walt is technology trainer and Library @ Two Digital Learning Center manager at an annual pay rate of almost $50,000 until June 30.

Library Director Sena Loyd, who previously held the post for which Walt was hired, said the position is grant-funded and ends then. She said there are no other staff openings, so whether Walt is retained July 1 and thereafter cannot yet be determined. Walt, a one-term consolidated city supervisor, left office a year ago after narrowly losing her re-election bid in 2012 to current Supervisor Jim Shirk. The seat involved is for Ward 4.

“We have applied for another grant,” Loyd said, but she noted it is a different type of grant and wouldn’t now speculate on Walt’s future employment. Loyd said it hinges on whether there is another opening and if Walt would be qualified for it.

Walt, who came to Carson City in the 1990s, was a public school teacher from Anaconda, Mont. She holds an undergraduate degree from University of Montana-Western at Dillon, obtained in 1994, and a Master of Arts in education, administration and supervision she earned from the University of Phoenix in 2001.

Elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2009, she was involved in parent-teachers association work, the American Youth Soccer Organization and Pinkerton Ballet Theatre. She and her husband, Kyle, have four children.

She served while a supervisor on the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Cultural Commission, supported the downtown Nugget-Library-Tech Center project called Question 1 in 2012, and was an advocate of a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly downtown core as well.

Loyd took over as library director Jan. 3 after Tammy Westergaard, deputy director, had led the library during a period while a search was under way to replace Sara Jones. Jones spearheaded the unsuccessful bid for the downtown project with the help of Westergaard and others.

Melanie Bruketta, Carson City Human Resources director, said Monday that Walt began work the same date Loyd became director. She said Walt’s tech trainer position had a salary range of $43,639.50 to $61,094.48.
