A group of local 4-H youth competed Jan. 9-12 in the Western National 4-H Roundup in Denver. They competed in Horse Judging, Horse Hippology and Livestock Judging against 31 other states.

“The event was held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show,” said leader Erin Lehman. “So as you can imagine our teams judged some very high quality animals this year.”

The Livestock Judging team placed fifth in the Livestock Quiz Bowl.

The Horse Hippology team placed ninth overall. The Horse Judging team placed seventh as a team for Halter Class, and 10th overall.

“Our teams represented Nevada very well this year and are eager to return next year,” Lehman said. “In the plans for next year, we will be adding a horse demonstration team, public speaking teams, and a horse quiz bowl team, which will give several more 4-H youth a great learning experience opportunity.”

The 4-H youth are now getting ready to start a new year with livestock and horses, gearing up for the Nevada Livestock Show & Auction in May, and sharpening their judging skills to compete in another statewide competition to qualify for Denver this fall, as well as looking forward to attending this year’s scheduled Sesquicentennial Fair at Fuji Park from July 30-Aug. 2.

Anyone interested in joining an active local horse 4-H group should call Lehman at 775-230-3900 as the new horse 4-H year is just beginning.
