The Northern Nevada Children’s Museum will host its 12th annual Asian New Year Celebration from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday with crafts, drumming, horses and a martial arts demonstration.
Board member Penny Holbrook has spearheaded this celebration since 2002. There will be lessons on calligraphy and using chopsticks, and arts and crafts projects.
The Reno Taiko Tsurunokai drum group will play traditional Japanese folk music as well as original songs at 11 a.m.
The year, the students from Karate and Kids Martial Arts Studio will be on hand to demonstrate their craft.
This is the year of the horse. “Horse” people are pleasant, have a great sense of humor, have an easygoing disposition and have many friends. If you were born in 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 or 2014, you were born in the year of the horse.
In honor of the horse, the Carson City Sheriff’s Posse will bring a horse for display.
The museum’s preschool literacy program, Books and Brags, will also center on the Asian New Year with stories of “The Dragon Dance” and “Chinese New Year.” The lesson will focus on Chinese New Year customs. Storytime begins every Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
