140 Years Ago

Matt Rinckel has built one of the most substantial brick buildings in Nevada. Upstairs are the finest rooms, and the ground floor is admirably arranged. Mr. Jones was engaged in putting the finishing touches on the meat blocks. This is what a man can do who is not afraid of work and not foolish enough to think he can splurge and put on airs and make a modest competency. (Matt Rinckel’s home is still standing on Curry Street.)

Amity Lodge No. 8, Knights of Pythias, will give a picnic at Steamboat Springs. No liquor will be sold so all may take their wives and children with the assurance that the day’s pleasures will not be marred by drunken characters.

All sorts: Gilbert Briggs returned from Meyers’ Station with 30 fine trout from the Lake at Glenbrook. If the blockade prevails, Carson will be nearly deserted as the greater portion of inhabitants will be out camping.

The War Food Administration will be the sole purchaser of all turkeys in 24 states, including Nevada, to fill holiday needs for the armed forces.
