Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels: A Silver Dollar to Silver Dollar

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Appropriately, the Silver Dollar Car Classic receives a Silver Dollar. We recognize all those involved in putting on this annual event and all those who participate with their vintage vehicles. They all make this a unique event. It’s just one of the many summer events that makes Carson City one of the must unique communities there is. And even though this event is referred to as a precursor to Hot August Nights, we hear from more and more people that because Hot August Nights is becoming more and more commercialized, they prefer the smaller Silver Dollar Classic.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Reno-Tahoe Open staff and the PGA Tour for securing a title sponsor for this week’s tournament at Montreux Golf and Country Club. And to Barracuda for stepping up to become that title sponsor. Because the event still attracts enough top golfers, the Barracuda Championship is still a viable tournament.

SILVER DOLLAR: And while were at it, all those involved with the American Century Championship deserve recognition as well.

SILVER DOLLAR: Here are a few others who deserve Silver Dollars: All those, particularly the youth, who are involved in the Dr. Seuss production, ‘Suessical Jr.”; to all those who volunteered this weekend at the Tahoe Rim Trail, providing another reason why the trail is one of the signature destinations in this area; to Carson City rodeo cowboy Cody Kiser for his fight against oral cancer; and to Carson High graduate and University of Nevada pitcher Adam Whitt for making the Cape Cod All-Star Game.

WOODEN NICKEL: To Las Vegas. Apparently what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas because in Nevada, you’re three times more likely to be wiretapped than any other state and Las Vegas is the major reason why. Yes, a lot of tourists come to Las Vegas, but law enforcement in Clark County need to provide some kind of justification as to why the wiretapping rate is so high.
