Officials: 1 dead in small plane crash in Dayton

A 45-year-old Nevada pilot has died in a small plane crash near Dayton Valley Airpark.

Lyon County sheriff’s deputies identified the victim on Wednesday as Steven Murphee of Dayton.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the homebuilt plane was a single-engine BD-4.

Sheriff’s Lt. Rob Hall told a Reno newspaper several witnesses saw the plane stall about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday and crash on federal land about a mile southeast of the airpark runway.

Gregor says another pilot discovered the plane’s wreckage.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

The aircraft is registered to Don J. and Carol Phillips of Dayton.
