The Mormons, as they are usually termed, held a meeting at the court house on Sunday evening last and were addressed by Alex H. Smith, son of Joseph Smith, who is the founder of that sect. Mr. Smith is a man of about 40 years of age, of modest bearing, making to pretension to elegance of diction, and is a missionary on the Pacific Coast.

“Several queer incidents,” says a Washington correspondent, “have occurred lately at the top of the Washington monument. The other day a gaunt and hungry cat made her appearance on the scaffolding where the workmen stand, having climbed the winding flights of stairs at the bottom. She looked wildly about her for a few moments that gave a leap into space. Four hundred and thirty-four feet is a good deal of a jump, but she landed on the ground alive, making it the greatest leap on record.”

Former State Mineralogist William Storms and the correspondent of the Sacramento Union returned to Mineral last night after a trip to Lassen Peak. They viewed the crater from an altitude of 9,000 feet and found it sending up steam, lava and ashes to a height of 150 feet. Although the mountain has been quiet two days, a violent disturbance is expected every hour. Storms is confident the activity is volcanic and not steam.

Warren engine company No. 1, the oldest continuously operated fire department in the state, held its annual banquet Saturday, marking the 81st anniversary of the organization.
