Annual Winnemucca forum set

The downturn in mining and efforts to diversify the economy will be the topic of the 3rd Annual Winnemucca Futures Forum next week.

The forum, hosted by the Humboldt Development Authority and its Winnemucca Futures Project, features a day-long series of speakers giving 20-minute presentations followed by 10-minute question-and-answer sessions.

Representatives from the mining industry will give updates on their operations, including Allied Nevada Gold Corp.’s Hycroft Mine expansion, Barrick Gold Corp.’s Carlin, Gold Strike and other mines, Newmont Mining Corp.’s Twin Creeks, Long Canyon and other sites and Marigold Mine, recently acquired by Silver Standard Resources Inc. Western Lithium USA Corp. will make a presentation on its Kings Valley Project lithium mine.

Recology Environmental Solutions Inc. executives will talk about plans for the Jungo Road mega landfill and a speaker from New Vision Development will give an update on the largest housing and commercial development projects in the history of Winnemucca.

“A lot has changed since we held the forum last year. The lower gold prices have halted or postponed many mining expansion projects, but there are many other positive things happening in and around our community,” says Pat Gray, chairman of the board at HDA. “In fact, the downturn in workforce and housing demand has provided us with a great opportunity to better position our community for growth in other, more diverse business sectors.”

The forum is being held at the Convention Center in Winnemucca on May 15 from 9 a.m. to 3:30pm. For more information, go online at winnemuccafutures.com. To attend, contact HDA coordinator Bill Sims at 775-623-1064 or email at bills@unr.edu.
