140 Years Ago

The road to Lake Bigler (Lake Tahoe) as we learn from Hank Monk, is clear of snow, except between Rigby’s Mill and Spooner’s Station. Hank went up in a buggy as far as the Mill and took Sprague Chase and another party. They were on their way to the lake and walked over that part of the road from the snow line to the Glenbrook. Hank says there are a good many men and woodchoppers walking over to the lake.

Modern spiritualism has been investigated by Seibert of the University of Pennsylvania. They have been studying the devices of the Davenport brothers, Katie King and others. They say they have heard of mediums in San Francisco who can cause writings to appear on a closed and sealed slate. The commission is anxious to hear of a haunted house, or something in the matter of investigating spirit photographs.

Telegraph school will start in Carson City. The course runs approximately six to eight weeks. The instructors will be Miss Hattie Keaster and Miss Betty Johnson under the supervision of Bix Melter, local manager of Western Union.

In a landmark case that nuclear tests in Nevada caused cancer among some people who lived downwind, a federal judge ruled that the government was liable for damages. In the 487 page verdict, nuclear testing caused cancer in 10 of 24 claims filed against the government ...
