Senator Square: Teachers get bowling vouchers for appreciation week

Carson High teachers were greeted this past week at our staff meeting by the general manager of Gold Dust West Casino. In honor of teacher appreciation week, Gold Dust West gave every teacher in our building a gift certificate for two with four games of bowling.

We sincerely appreciate this gesture and thank Gold Dust for their continued support of our staff and students at CHS.

FRIENDSHIP BALL

Last weekend, the fifth annual Friendship Ball was held at Carson High. The Friendship Ball is a prom for students with disabilities and their regular education peer mentors and friends. It was a magical night with dancing, music and fun.

Decorations were provided by Ann Britt and her leadership students. Music was provided by Sherri Kelley. The beautiful bouquets were arranged by Charlie Mann’s FFA students. Maria Gonzales was crowned as the Friendship Ball Queen and Ivan Rosas-Medina was crowned as the King.

DEBATE FUNDRAISER

Carson High Speech and Debate will be hosting a fundraiser 7-8:30 p.m. May 27 in the upstairs cafeteria of CHS. Come see an exhibition of all the events Carson High has competed in this year. Learn, laugh and support a great cause, helping students attend the national competition. Tickets are $5 at the door.

CHS ART WINNERS

Erica Gallegos and Sophie Williams are winners of a Carson High Art Contest. This work will be displayed in the glass showcase near the guidance office next week. This work will have a more permanent home for the upcoming years in the Administrative Office. Thanks to the other artists on display for their participation: Austin Martinez, Liz Blankenship, Sarah Flaig, Juan Mendoza-Meda, Victor Ramirez and Charles Hersey.

CHEERLEADERS THANKS

The new Carson High School cheerleading team for 2014 and 2015 would like to thank Capital Ford for sponsoring Drive One For Your School on Saturday. They reached their goal of 300 drivers.

The money raised will help pay for cheer camp this summer. Thank you to all the drivers, Carson High School athletics and administration, and the cheerleaders and their families for their support.

FINAL BAND CONCERT

The final CHS band and orchestra concert of the year will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Carson Community Center.

CHS ITALY TRIP

Todd Ackerman, teacher at Carson High School is organizing an 11-day, budget friendly tour of Rome, Venice and Florence, with highlights including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel and many more.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

The senior spotlight this week is on Daniel Yosafat. Daniel has maintained a standard of excellence throughout his high school years, with a slew of advanced-placement and honors courses, and attaining a weighted grade-point average of 4.41. In addition to his stellar academic achievements Daniel keeps himself busy with many extracurricular activities.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the cross-country team. He is also an active member of Skills USA and FBLA, where he recently participated in state competitions for both clubs. Daniel is a core team member at his church. As a team leader he leads youth groups at retreats and other church events.

He also is a member of the youth band at his church where he sings and plays guitar. Daniel has been accepted into the honors program at UNR next year.

His intended major will be computer science. Please join me in congratulating Daniel on a job well done. We are extremely proud of his accomplishments and wish him much success in his future.
