Community roundup: Mighty Mites drop 6-0 thriller

Reno North scored late in the fourth quarter to snap a scoreless tie and knock off the Carson City Mighty Mites, 6-0.

Carson returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Truckee at Governors Field.

Miles Frewert and Nathan McKee had fumble recoveries to lead Carson. Josiah White, David Smith, Zach Guthrie and Danny Alvarado also played well defensively.

Carson, behind the running of Keegan Ferris and Alex Myrehn plus the passing combo of Jessie Delgado and Decarlo Quintana, moved the ball deep into Reno territory but couldn’t score. Gavin Green, Tristan Hawkins and Jessie Metoxen were praised for their blocking.

Smetreski wins at CVGC

Ken Smetreski shot a net 70 to win Flight A at the recent Carson Valley Men’s Club tournament. Dan Essary and Jack Sparman tied for second with 76s.

Augue Martinez won Flight B with a 65, six shots better than Charlie Serafine and Charlie Poe. Frank Tisiot won Flight C with a 65, one shot ahead of Gary Carsten and three ahead of Matt Budjako. John Carey won Flight D with a 66, three better than Bill Centers and six better than Jim Tavernier.

• Tisiot won A flight for the men’s A event on Sept. 28 with a 66. Joe Morison finished at 67, while Neil Bain was third at 76. Jack Zippwald won Flight B with a 69, a shot better than Carsten. Carey was third with a 72.

Bell wins Empire tie-breaker

Charles Bell won a three-way tie-breaker to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event on Oct. 1. He beat Jim Shabi and John Tierney. All three had 66s as did Bill Gibson.

Jim Green won Flight B with a 66 and Ray McPartlin was second with a 67. John Sullivan and Gary Mick tied for third with 68s. Vic Roscha won Flight C in a tiebreaker over Fred Blackburn. Both shots net 63s. Marty Martinez and Norm Scroggin had 67s.
