December deadline for annual historic preservation grants

Nonprofit groups have until Dec. 5 to submit applications for the annual Historic Preservation Grants.

The State Historic Preservation Office distributes the money, which comes from off-shore oil and gas lease fees through the National Park Service.

The applications will be reviewed in January and funding will be distributed once the office receives its annual funding from Congress.

The priorities established by the state office this year are topped by proposals that create Heritage Tourism materials emphasizing the heritage of Nevada’s populations and cultural resources and projects that record and complete National Register of Historic Places evaluations for threatened historic and prehistoric archaeological resources. Grants will also be awarded for projects that inventory historic buildings, districts and sites and for educational programs to support economic revitalization.

Questions should be referred to grant coordinator Elyse Jolly at 684-3450.
