Sin City says ‘I do’ to same-sex weddings

LAS VEGAS — An initial frenzied filing for Nevada’s first same-sex marriage licenses followed by quickie late-night ceremonies is giving way to business almost as usual in the self-proclaimed wedding capital of the world.

At least one chapel stayed open all night to marry couples and a mass wedding is planned Sunday.

But county marriage bureaus in Las Vegas and Reno are seeing little more than a trickle Friday of same-sex couples seeking licenses.

Forty licenses were issued from 5 p.m. Thursday until midnight in Las Vegas after a federal judge lifted a ban on gay marriages. Washoe County issued nine.

To boost awareness the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority placed a full page ad in USA Today on Friday featuring two groom cake-toppers with a view of Vegas in the background.
