INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will celebrate the completion of new trail to the Mount Houghton Summit from the Rim Trail at Relay Ridge.
It’s the final phase of the multi-year Rim to Reno Project that connected the Tahoe Rim Trail to communities in Northern Nevada by building trail from Mount Rose to the Thomas Creek Trailhead.
The .7 miles of trail to Mount Houghton Summit increases recreational access in the Mount Rose area and protects Tahoe Draba, an endemic species found only in a few sites in the Tahoe Basin.
Trail building was a summer-long endeavor with more than 100 volunteers and more than 2,000 hours contributed.
A Mount Houghton Opening Ceremony will take place Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. TRTA members will meet attendees at the Mount Rose Summit Trailhead parking lot on Highway 431, eight miles east of Incline Village.
Community members, volunteers and partners who attend the free event will then shuttle to Relay Ridge, where TRTA will have a short presentation, install the final trail sign, and lead a hike on the new section (approximate total hiking distance is three miles). Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
