Education announcements: Virtual school to hold information session May 14

Nevada Connections Academy is hosting a parent to parent information session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Starbucks, 3325 Retail Drive.

Families interested in learning more about the virtual public school are invited to hear about what virtual schools are from a parent with a child currently enrolled in the school.

Nevada Connections Academy is enrolling K-12 students for the next school year.

Winners of Grace Christian science fair announced

Grace Christian Academy Lions announced winners of its second annual science fair.

Katie Boogman, a seventh grader, won first place for Minty Fresh; Emma Sufka, a fifth grader, won second place for All Stretched Out; and Quinn Cummings, an eighth grader, won third place for Fire! Fire! Don’t Catch on Fire!

Other winners include: Remi Cummings, third grade; Joscelyn Turner, fourth grade; and Morgan Jensen, sixth grade.

Carson City natives join Phi Kappa Phi honor society

Timothy Grunert and Jennifer Sturm, both of Carson City, were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
