Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office says he’s not considering calling a special legislative session over a controversial public school attendance requirement in Nevada’s new Education Savings Account program.
The statement Friday comes after suggestions during a regulatory workshop earlier in the day that the governor might reconvene the Legislature to consider changing the law.
The program allows parents to claim the majority of their child’s per-pupil state funding and use it at a private school.
A law passed this spring requires students attend 100 days of public school before participating. That requirement angered private school parents, who don’t want to place their children in public school to gain eligibility.
Sandoval spokeswoman Mari St. Martin says the governor believes the treasurer should focus on drafting regulations that align with the original bill.
