Nevada Senate Democrats say they’re outraged over a legislative rule that could potentially govern the process of drawing new voting district boundaries.
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Aaron Ford said in a statement on Monday that Republicans inserted last-minute language governing the redistricting process into the rules of the Senate to avoid a public review component.
Senate Democrats voted unanimously against the rule, which was approved by the Republican-controlled Senate.
The redistricting process is historically done every 10 years after the census, and the current maps were drawn in 2011. Nevada state law doesn’t explicitly state how often redistricting should occur.
Districts can favor one party over the other depending on how they’re drawn.
Senate Assistant Majority Leader Ben Kieckhefer said the caucus didn’t have plans to draw new districts this session.
