Education achievements: Dayton woman returns from studying in Italy

Riley Beckwith, a University of Dallas student from Dayton, spent the 2014 fall semester studying abroad at the University of Dallas’ 12-acre Eugene Constantin Campus just outside Rome, Italy.

Since 1970, University of Dallas students have had the opportunity — usually in their sophomore years — to spend a semester in the Eternal City studying, traveling and experiencing the art, architecture, literature and philosophy. In addition to taking study trips to locations like the Roman Coliseum and the Vatican, students also travel throughout Italy on professor-led tours. A highlight of the semester is a 10-day study tour of Greece where students perform plays in ancient amphitheaters and read about Socrates on the sites where he once philosophized.

Yerington man to tour with university band

The University Symphonic Band from Concordia University, Nebraska, which includes Nicholas Harding, a senior from Yerington who plays euphonium, will perform at churches and schools throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas during its annual tour.

The band tours a part of the United States each year and toured to China in the summer of 2007. It will perform March 5-14 on tour and at St. John Lutheran Church in its hometown of Seward, Nebraska, on March 22.

The 49-member ensemble is open to all Concordia students by audition each year. It places emphasis on sacred, multicultural and contemporary literature, as well as traditional concert band repertoire.
