Ford now President

Amidst the fallout of the Watergate scandal, Richard M. Nixon returned to his native California as Gerald R. Ford took the oath of office on Aug. 7, 1974, becoming the 38th president of the United States. Ford implored Americans to “let brotherly love purge our hearts of suspicion and hate.”
