Carson City area holiday events

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is hosting three weekends of holiday trains Nov. 27-29 and Dec. 5-6 and 12-13. Trains depart at noon and 2 p.m. from Virginia City’s F Street Station. The rides offer hot chocolate, cider, cookies and candy canes and a reading of the poem “Night Before Christmas” and other activities. Strings in the Schools is presenting its sixth annual This is Not a Christmas Concert at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Carson City Community Center. Admission is free.

Wild Horse Children’s Theater is putting on the holiday musical “Babes in Toyland” at 7 p.m. on Fridays; at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays Dec. 4-13 in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall. Indian tacos and nearly 50 vendors will be on hand at a Christmas craft faire from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 4-5 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 in the gymnasium of Carson Colony, 2900 S. Curry St.

Santa Trains will run every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, 2180 S. Carson St. Santa will be on hand, and Warren Engine Company will sell refreshments. Tickets cost $5 per person; children under 3 who sit in an adult’s lap ride for free. St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Outreach Center, 4280 Highway 50 E. in Silver Springs, is hosting its annual Christmas Craft Faire from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 5. Raffle tickets for a dinner package for eight will be sold for $2 each or $5 for three. Call 775-577-9606.

Pets can have their photos taken with Santa from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 5, when Carson Animal Services Initiative hosts its pictures with Santa event at Benson’s Feed and Tack, 2750 Highway 50. High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s Christmas dance party is Dec. 5 in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom. A members appreciation dinner catered by Mitch Tufts is at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is $10, but join the club that night, and dinner and dance are free. The Carson City Senior Center’s Moonlight & Mistletoe, a Christmas dinner of Cornish game hen, wild rice, vegetables, rolls and dessert, is Dec. 5 in the Sagebrush Room of the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Doors open at 5 p.m., with dinner following one hour later. There will be dancing, a silent auction, a wine and beer bar, a 50/50 raffle and pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Clause. Entertainment by Kim Copel-Harris as Charley Parkhurst, a local stagecoach driver, will be on hand at Carson City Historical Society’s Christmas party from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at Bliss Mansion, 608 Elizabeth St. A brief meeting and election of next year’s officers also will take place. The New Victorian Dancers and Carson City Symphony Chorus will be featured in Carson City Symphony’s 32nd annual Holiday Treat concert at 4 p.m. Dec. 13 in the Bob Boldrick Theater of the Carson City Community Center.
