Prison says Nevada inmate killed himself in the infirmary

LAS VEGAS — Prison officials say a 39-year-old convicted child molester appears to have killed himself at High Desert State Prison northwest of Las Vegas.

The Nevada Department of Corrections said Wednesday that Andres Rivera had died the night before in his private cell in the infirmary.

Officials say Rivera had been in the prison since June and was serving two consecutive sentences of up to 20 years for sexual assault with a child younger than 16 years old and lewdness with a child younger than 14 years old.

The Clark County Coroner’s office is expected to conduct an autopsy.
