The Nevada Department of Transportation has started two projects in the Tahoe Basin including the first phase of repair work to the Cave Rock tunnels.
A spokesman said drivers will see temporary lane reductions on U.S. 50 between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. as traffic will be diverted through the eastbound tunnel. Delays could be as long as 30 minutes.
The spokesman said crews are doing testing and preparatory work for a project next spring that’s going to extend the westbound tunnel entrance and provide an extended overhang to improve driver safety and add protection against potential rockfalls.
In addition, the department is adding pedestrian and safety features on State Route 28 in Incline Village. A crosswalk west of Village Blvd. will be relocated so it will be closer to the bus stop. That and the crosswalk east of Village Blvd. will be enhanced with crossing signals, street lighting and sidewalk ramps.
The work is to be finished by the end of fall at a cost of nearly $300,000. The money is part of $10 million in highway funds NDOT has dedicated to pedestrian enhancements in Tahoe, Las Vegas and Reno over the coming year.
