California retirees can be asset to Carson

According to Jason Kuchnicki’s April 14 commentary, The Vintage development will bring old Californians with no interest in the community.

Ten years ago I moved from California to Carson. Less than a year later I bought a house and became a Sierra Club outings leader, I took over the walking and hiking program for Muscle Powered, started the Easy Walk Program for the Parks & Recreation Department, served as president of Muscle Powered, started monthly Trash Mobs, became a founding member of the Eagle Valley Trails Committee, served on the Open Space Advisory Committee, and Carson City Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Workgroup.

I can’t count how many retiree transplants I’ve met who have become active in things like CASI, RSVP, the BAC, and politics.

The people coming here are going to want a beautiful, vibrant, community, with access to recreation, arts, fine dining, entertainment, and professional services, and I would wager more than half of them will be out there actively supporting this community.

Kuchnicki spoke of the need to bring in young professionals and skilled laborers, and I agree. But the infusion of tax dollars these retirees bring, along with their vision and energy, will support the kinds of improvements that will attract the business that will bring in professional and skilled jobs.

One of the most annoying irritants I experience in Carson is the negativity. The funny thing is, I never seem to run into these negative naysayers while I’m out there working hard to make this a better place to work, live, and play.
