Attorneys gear up for Getty trial

In preparation for a several week long murder trial, attorneys met with Judge Tod Young on Tuesday for a pre-trial conference.

Trent Getty is accused in the murder of his 10-week-old daughter in January 2015. He has been in the custody of the Douglas County Jail since his Jan. 10, 2015 arrest in Sacramento.

The purpose of the pre-trial was to discuss motions filed by both the defense and the District Attorney’s office.

They also discussed jury qualifications and how to proceed from this point forward.

A portion of the meeting was closed to the press and the public in order to protect information that can’t be heard until the trial.

Several motions were approved and denied, but the remainder of them will be discussed a few days before trial on Thursday.

Getty brought his unresponsive daughter to the Carson Valley Medical Center around 2:15 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2015, with unknown injuries.

He told investigators he picked up his daughter from her grandmother’s house around 7 p.m. Jan. 6, put her in her swing, gave her a bottle and then fell asleep on the couch.

He woke to find her swing tipped over and Ava lying on the floor.

He was released that morning, before investigators learned Ava might have been the victim of a blow to the head. She was taken off life support a few days later.

Getty was picked up in Sacramento a few days later.

Getty has defense attorneys Maria Pence and Jamie Henry working his case, and both the state and the defense have until next week to go over all of the filed motions.

“Mr. Getty only has one life and that’s what he is looking at,” said Pence. “It is important that he has a fair trial.

The trial will begin on May 9 and last a few weeks.
