It’s a ‘tree’-mendous effort

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those enthusiasts who put together the Nevada Big Tree Register provided by the Nevada Division of Forestry. They look for Nevada’s most impressive and largest trees and through 2015 they’ve placed more than 300 specimens on the list.

SILVER DOLLAR: We honor one of our own as press operator Luis Ramirez retired. His last day was Friday. Ramirez spent 38 years working in newspapers, beginning in Fallon. He has spent most of his time working with what is now called the Sierra Nevada Media Group, which includes the Nevada Appeal. For almost four decades, Ramirez has served an important role in making sure you received various newspapers in the area, including the Appeal.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Parks and Recreation and the Carson City Junior Giants for bringing well-known speaker Michael Pritchard to talk about anti-bullying.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Safeway for providing a $10,000 grant to the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation, helping to provide the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center more resources to serve their patients. Also to Campagni Auto Group for their continuous support of the HopeFest, which will take place Friday night.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Tanya Crew, owner of Motorcycle-Works, for receiving the Woman-Owned Business of the Year award from eBay.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Firehouse Subs for feeding firefighters fighting wildfires and also for their effort and others in providing water for first responders during the H20 For Heroes event held last weekend.
