Beware of fake charity for police

A new scam is circulating through Carson City, tricking people to donate to a fake charity for police officers.

The scam claims Carson Proud created a community refrigerator mailer for people to take out an ad to support local law enforcement. The advertisement said “In a time of negativity we are making a stand to support our local police officers for all the hard and dedicated work they to do keep our community safe! Please join us by placing a ad to help show them we care and respect all the hard work put in by these brave men and women!”

It offers for people to buy advertisement space for $340 to $700 for the mailer that claims will be sent out to 5,000 family homes in October.

However, Carson Proud isn’t involved in the mailer, and the Chamber of Commerce said the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t get any of the money. The Chamber has sent out an email warning residents this is a scam.

If you’re contacted, inform the Sheriff’s Office at 775-887-2500.
