The Scientific American says: If you have a boat that leaks badly, and it is in strong current, or if you are towing it up stream, all you have to do to keep it dry is to bore a hold through the bottom and insert a piece of steel or iron, half round, through the hole, letting it extend a few inches below the bottom of the boat, and all the water will run out without any labor. I think at seat it could be kept afloat if you could keep her going four miles an hour.

130 years ago

S. J. Kendall, janitor at the State University, brought to the Gazette office a strange specie of spider, captured while he was renovating the building. The head and legs of the insect are of a mottled color, interspersed with black spots. Its body has a reddish tinge, forming almost wings, with horned projections and apparent eyes, so which when looked at from the rear resemble the face, eyes and ears of a cat.

100 years ago

Gov. Boyle is in receipt of a check from the treasury department at Washington, D.C., for $17,597.15. This represents Nevada’s proportion, 25 percent, of the monies received by the government for leasing on grazing and timber lands.

70 years ago

The Melody Lane continued its pleasing radio programs last night and in addition to plugging Carson City (the nation’s smallest but most colorful state capital) extended its good-will broadcasts to historic and famed Virginia City.

50 years ago

Ribbons and trophies were awarded to Ormsby County 4-H members after the Achievement Day evening program. In the senior division, Minnie Edmunson won the blue ribbon and a trophy from the Ormsby County Homemakers Council for “A Tasty Meal for the Family.”

30 years ago

A proposal to substantially increase the mayor’s salary and powers in Carson City government will be reviewed by the Charter Review Commission at the request of former Carson City mayor Harold Jacobsen.
