The Nevada State Railroad Museum and Friends of the museum launched a new holiday train ride for children who are battling cancer and other illnesses.
The Special Santa train began operations Dec. 3 and is running again today at the museum. The historic Virginia and Truckee #25 steam locomotive takes passengers around the museum as Santa hands out candy canes.
The Special Train is sanitized after every ride for the safety of children with compromised immune systems. It is recommended to ensure that nobody has a cold before attending the event, as it could cause a risk to children.
Parents also can buy raffle tickets to claim prizes donated by local businesses, organizations and community members. Train tickets are already paid for by Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation.
Dec. 17 is the last day the Special Santa train operations for the year, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. There are seats available for children with compromised immune systems and their families. For more information and reservations, contact the museum at 775-687-6953 ext. 5.
