Governor directs task force to work on rooftop solar policy

LAS VEGAS — Gov. Brian Sandoval is asking an energy task force to take up hot-button issues including rooftop solar rate-setting and the Clean Power Plan.

The governor’s chief strategy officer, Dale Erquiaga, announced plans Tuesday to reconvene the New Energy Industry Task Force for the next year.

The Nevada Public Utilities Commission set new rates late last year for net metering, the process of people selling excess energy from their solar panels back to the utility. Rooftop solar companies say the decision prompted them to lay off hundreds of people. Former solar employees have crowded PUC meetings to plead with the commission to reverse course. and criticize the decision.

PUC members implement policy but don’t create it. The task force would help develop broader policy goals before the 2017 legislative session.
