Bruno Richard Hauptmann began to “crack” today as he paced back and forth in his cell, realizing for the first time the meaning of the death sentence which was imposed upon him last night, following the return of the jury’s verdict fining him guilty as charged in the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr., son of the American aviator.
Hauptmann’s emotional reactions changed rapidly during the night. He heard first the verdict and then the sentence of death without breaking.
Upon his return to his cell, Hauptmann fell across the cot in a faint, and he sobbed occasionally during the night.
Immediately after the announcement of the verdict Judge Trenchard sentenced Hauptmann to die in the electric chair on March 18.
