Our opinion: Carson High boys basketball team gives community a shot in the arm

Everybody loves a winner. But the Carson High boys basketball team’s first regional championship for the school since 1995 is more about winning. It’s about community.

We have written here before how even though Carson City has become relatively large in size, it really remains a close-knit, small community. Day-in-and-day-out, year-in-and-year-out, Carson City residents regularly come together for worthy causes, during times of trouble and during times when there’s cause for celebration.

Now the community is coming together behind the CHS boys basketball team, which beat Reno 51-45 Saturday for the Northern Division I title. Carson has now gone unbeaten at 23-0 in games played in Northern Nevada, which includes a 16-0 mark in Sierra League play.

We know the Senators head into the state championships as underdogs, but we like the Senators’ chances because they’re unbeaten in Northern Nevada and the state tournament is being played at Lawlor Events Center. Because the Senators have played so well in Northern Nevada this season, we believe they can keep their unbeaten streak in Northern Nevada. And if they can do that, they’ll be state champions.

But we’re sure Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia is doing his best Norman Dale impersonation and telling his players playing he’s sure playing for the state title has been beyond their wildest dreams so keep them right there.

The Senators head to Lawlor Events Center to play Coronado at 8 p.m. tonight in the state semifinals and to be sure there’s going to be a large contingent from the community who follows them.

Many of us can’t help but dream about the Senators winning a state title, something that hasn’t been done at CHS since 1975. But no matter what happens, we’re proud of this team. What else would you expect from a close-knit community?
